Round 3 planting

More planting occurred today.  We just did not have enough tomatoes and the new varieties came in.  So today  Moskovich tomatoes went in as well as Gilbertie Paste tomatoes and more California Wonder peppers.  Lemon Balm and some supplementary spinach went in.  Last time I planted indoors, I made some paper pots and filled them with some potting soil.  I decided to go a different route this time.
For Christmas, my in-laws gave us a Kureig coffee maker.  It makes a perfect cup each time.  The one thing I hate is all the waste it creates.  For a time, I took off the foil top, dug out the coffee grinds, then recycled the plastic bottom and the foil tops.

Then I realized they look like perfect little pots, and coffee can be used as a potting medium as well.  So off came the foil tops with a small knife and with a few jabs of the knife, I loosened up the coffee grinds.  I then added a touch of potting soil and water and poof...there I had some little one inch pots.  Perfect to start seeds and then transplant them into larger newspaper pots.
Let's see how this goes.

  2. Looks super. We've succesfully done trials of germinating and starting tomato seeds in the K-cups right in with the coffee grinds. Turns our they don't mind the acid. hmmm. what else will grow in coffee grinds?

  3. Ooooh! What a GREAT idea! My husband's coworker just scored a Kurig for the two of them at their office (they were so tired of the gross coffee). Although I think the Kurig is so cool, I lemented the waste as well. We were considering how we could fashion a reusable filter or something for it. But I'm going to email him this post instead. He'll be really excited.

  4. Anisa, there is in fact a reusable filter designed just for the kurig..you can usually find it on the shelf by the other coffee filters. Its a little basket thing that fits in the cup holder and you can just fill it with good coffee. But they do make great starter pots!

  6. It's called a K-cup...we use ours daily now that we are all out of cups...I think I got it on Amazon for like $9.99. I fill it up to the top and make 2 cups of coffee for my husband's travel mug in the morning (1st cup super strong, second super weak...makes one nice mug of coffee.)

  7. That is a super idea and I just sent my sister to your blog to have a look. I use the reuseable gold coffee filter, but my sister uses the little coffee things like these.
We just picked our first tomato this evening! I am so glad spring is here.
